Nieuw Amsterdam

After several years I returned to the relaxed and familiar Holland America Family and immediately felt at home. The always gracious crew was friendly and attentive. The ship comfortably designed with a stable ride even in rough water in my deck 5 cabin.

My balcony cabin was comfortable with plenty of storage even for a longer cruise.  The balcony had plenty of room and a lovely view with the glass enclosure. If you like even a larger balcony consider Deck 4 aft starboard. I was in 5153 and in looking down from the balcony they appeared to be about 2’ wider.

We tried every specialty dining venue.  For my party of 4 we would in the future skip the seafood boil and add an additional night at the amazing Morimoto by Sea. A treasure land or sea.

The main dining rooms mirrored the lido for many dishes. The lido does have the advantage of al fresco dining on the fan tail at the adults only pool and the made to order pizza station.

Entertainment was very good the house singers and dancers are exceptional. In a 7 night cruise they performed three stellar performances. The illusionist was very entertaining, however, the comedian was not up to par, painfully so.

Musical offerings were varied and scattered around the ship.

I don’t think I have ever noticed a sign language interpreter at music performances but there was one working a rock and roll show. Do be aware that the sound levels in the Rolling Stone Lounge can be excessive. We had to leave as it was just too loud. Billboard Onboard is an excellent choice for a setting more friendly to your ears but the demand often exceeds demand so arrive early for seating.

Oddly HAL still has what appeared to be thriving photo and art venues.  There is a multipage color daily program which is something unusual now on ships.

The main show lounge did not feel crowded.   It was inviting with comfortable seats and many unobstructed seats. Lighting and sound was excellent as were effects and costumes for the production shows.

Oddly there were no expert lecturers on our sailing.

There were many more mobility devices than I have seen on my recent sailings making for slower elevator usage. Stair climbing for those able may be in order.

Tips:

The Guide to Cruising in your cabin lacks information you may expect such as how to call another cabin from your cabin or how to reset your internet. For some such functions you are directed to the TV.  I have no idea if that is true as we did not turn it on after the safety talk.

The motorcoach departure was chaotic. If the airport is close as it is in San Diego taxi or other arrangements may be preferred.
